5 Reasons to Start a Capsule Wardrobe

Today I want to highlight the reasons to start a capsule wardrobe. I’m sure there are more than 5 reasons, but these are the top 5 that come to the forefront for me. I’m not out here trying to convince or persuade people to buy into the capsule wardrobe life, but I thought it would be a good idea to provide some context as to why adopting the capsule approach to your wardrobe could be a good idea for you.

1. Slow Fashion Down

This was my number one reason for starting my capsule wardrobe journey. When I watched The True Cost in 2015 it absolutely broke my heart. The first version of it I watched didn’t have subtitles, so I couldn’t understand what some of the factory workers were saying, but I could feel it through their emotions. I have since watched the documentary a few more times, and every single time it still stings a little knowing that I once blindly contributed to the fast fashion problem. (I’m planning on doing a more detailed post around why I started my capsule wardrobe and how I feel about fast fashion in a future post. A story for another day.)

Adopting the capsule wardrobe approach means less shopping, which means less fuel on the fast fashion fire. Changing your shopping habits – buying less, and choosing well – is the number one way we can all contribute to slowing down fast fashion.

2. Get To Know Your Style Self

This is one of the most fun results of going on a capsule wardrobe journey. Capsule wardrobes push you to identify your true personal style since the goal is for every piece in your wardrobe to be specifically curated for you. Once you identify your personal style, dressing and styling yourself becomes fun and easy-breezy! Identifying your personal style also changes your perception of fashion trends. You start to see “new season” items with a completely different eye. What once may have made you think, “ooh, I need to try this seasons hottest item!”, now makes you think, “hmm, that’s nice but it’s really not my style,” or, “that’s cute, but I know it won’t be timeless.”

3. Minimize Closet Clutter

One of the absolute crutches of wardrobe malfunction is too-much-stuff!! When there is too much stuff in your closet, one of two things happen:

  1. You mentally do not want to deal with it, so you think you have nothing to wear which could result in more shopping.
  2. All your clothes are smooshed together and you cannot clearly see any harmony amongst the items you own, making it difficult to find something to wear.

With a capsule wardrobe you have fewer items of clothing, and fewer items means more room for your clothing to breathe. The items in your capsule will likely also follow a colour theme, which will create visual harmony. The result is an approachable closet that you can easily pull from to create looks that work seamlessly.

4. Save Money by Becoming a Mindful Shopper

A capsule wardrobe will save you money in the long run because you are committing to only purchasing high quality and long-lasting items that are on our your capsule wardrobe checklist. Once you’ve shopped your checklist and your capsule is complete, you will have no reason for regular or habitual shopping. Your wardrobe purchases will be far more infrequent – only to replace a worn-out item, or add a special seasonal piece.

A well-curated capsule wardrobe eliminates the need to go shopping for a new dress or outfit for an occasion – you have everything you need.

5. Save Time by Becoming Your Own Pro Stylist!

A capsule wardrobe will save you time when it comes to getting ready or shopping for a new item. Gone are the days where it will take you far longer than necessary to find something to wear. The anxiety of trying to put together an outfit within a limited window of time in the mornings will be eliminated from your life. Your closet will almost become idiot-proof. All of the items in your capsule will work together and numerous combinations that all look great on you!

The frustration of trying to find something you love and that looks great on you while out shopping will also be eliminated because by now you’ll be an expert in your personal style. When out shopping you’ll know exactly what you are looking for – the cut, the fit, the colour, the material – and you’ll end up with fewer disappoints when trying items on.

I hope these 5 reasons gave you new insights into the ‘why’ around starting a capsule wardrobe journey. If you’re not already on one, I encourage you to try! The more we adopt the capsule approach to clothing, the less we will contribute to the fast fashion problem.
