What is a seasonal capsule? A seasonal capsule is a cross section of your wardrobe that will become your staple pieces for that particular season. Each seasonal capsule can be annotated with trendier pieces that may circulate in and out of your wardrobe throughout the years. In this post I wanted to share my must-have items to create a dependable core for your capsule wardrobe for the Spring season. I will not be specifying brands, because how you decide to add these pieces is completely up to your taste and budget.
As Spring is very much a season of transitional weather, light jackets and knits will still have a place in your wardrobe if you live in a 4 season climate. The first four items listed below are great as they will work double-duty for you as they will also be staples in your seasonal capsule come Fall, while items 5 through 10 can be carried from Spring into your Summer Capsule.

- Leather Jacket
- A great leather jacket will serve you for years to come as it can pair well with being dressed up or down. This piece can provide warmth while lending you some of those effortless edgy vibes that can really tie a look together.
- Denim Jacket
- I know not everyone loves a denim jacket, but this piece is a true classic that has been on the fashion map for years – just as persistently as the leather jacket. I see it is as softer version of the leather jacket look. It can still be worn dressed up or down, and lends some effortless ‘cool’ to an otherwise basic outfit.
- Trench Coat
- The trench coat is a must have for Spring’s rainy days. While the trench coat can now also be dressed down (thanks to recent laidback loungewear + dad sneaker trends), this piece will serve as your one “dressier” outerwear option throughout Spring. A trench can be worn with jeans, workwear, or a dress.
- Light Knit Sweater
- Because Spring still tends to be quite cool in the beginning as the weather changes from winter temperatures, keeping a knit sweater in rotation is a must. I recommend opting for one in a lighter weighted texture and colour. One in a lighter neutral colour will keep it from looking too “heavy” when styled with the rest of your Spring Capsule.
- White Tee
- This goes without saying; a white tee should be a staple piece in your Capsule Wardrobe in general. It will serve as a great piece to wear on it’s own with a pair of jeans, or layered under a jacket.
- Light Denim Jeans
- A good pair of light denim jeans will serve as a great building block for multiple Spring looks. I recommend going for a pair that fits well and is not distressed. I know we all love a good distressed look, but I’ve recently chosen to stay away from distressed denim since I couldn’t pair them with all of my capsule categories (i.e. workwear appropriate). Going for a clean, well-fitting pair will serve you well and keep you looking polished.
- Long Slip Dress or Skirt
- A recent discovery for me is the versatility of a neutral slip dress or long skirt. These can be dressed up or down – worn with a tailored jacket, or a hoodie and sneakers (trust me, it works!). I recommend choosing one that has a lower necklines so it can layer well with various tops. And remember to choose a length that is suitable for your frame!
- White Sneakers
- Again, another Capsule Wardrobe staple. A classic white sneaker can be paired with jeans, tailored pants, and even dresses! These shoes will serve you well until sandal season begins!
- Light (beige or white) Handbag
- Ah, the handbag – my favourite accessory! To keep things light for Spring, choose a good quality handbag in a lighter colour. I prefer neutrals (beige, white and cream), and white bags are definitely having a moment in fashion right now. If you prefer more colour I recommend going for a light colour that can pair well with many colours and looks in your wardrobe. I also recommend going for something that is a suitable size for everyday – something that fits your essentials, and not something that someone would expect you to haul to an overnight trip.
- Hat
- The hat is not a wardrobe essential for everyone, but I must say it does come in handy for those bad hair days! Depending on your personal style, you can either choose a baseball cap style, or a felted hat. Whatever style you choose, I recommend you for a neutral colour with no patterns or logos. A hat can elevate your look, and add that final ‘styled’ look to your outfit.
Hope you found this post helpful. How many of these Spring Capsule pieces do you already have in your wardrobe? Did any make it on to your Spring Wish List? I’ve added a trench coat and felted hat to my Spring Wish List for 2021!
